A little bit about me…

Hello world! My name is Mike Hacku and I’m a graduate student at the beautiful Quinnipiac University in Handen,CT. The graduate program I’m in is called Interactive Communications, and it deals with the future of how people obtain media and other information digitally. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Print Journalism from Quinnipiac University in 2007, and I have worked in the past with the New Haven Register’s sports section. I took this graduate program because I realize the field of communications is ever-changing. Things such as news and other journalistic content are mediums that are becoming increasingly internet-based. In order to better equip myself for a long lasting and fulfilling career in the “future” of communications, I feel that this graduate program will be essential to my success.
My goal by entering the Interactive Communications graduate program is to show my future employers that I have an understanding of where the future of communications is going. These classes will allow me to hone my craft and develop the skills that will allow me to compete in this new and exciting digital movement. Journalism is becoming and interactive and non-linear media found online, and whether my future lies with a newspaper that is going digital or a sports network that relies on media relayed on portable devices, I will be better prepared for whatever comes next.
I just recently got into blogging and twitter. My main passions are not only sports but also music. I just started a new music blog over at www.mikehacku.blogspot.com and it’s become a lot of fun. My friends are always asking me for new music and I felt like this was a great way for me to share some of the songs I find and also do a little writing on the side to keep my brain fresh. There is so much great music out there that’s not on the radio, I almost find it a crime that some of this stuff doesn’t make the cut on mainstream radio. My favorite music site is probably www.hypem.com, and it takes all music that has been blogged from all over the world and places it onto one site. You can get lost on there, there’s a lot of good stuff. I’ve included a song I’m listening to right now at the bottom of this post.
I’m currently unemployed and living back in my hometown of Wallingford,CT, which is right down the road from Hamden. I have a 1 year old golden retriever named Sadie who keeps me occupied most days. I’m a die hard Yankee fan so I hope you can deal with that. I can’t wait to get started with the class, it should be fun!

Not a big Cold War Kids fan, but went over to your site to look for common ground
. I liked some of the early stuff I heard from Vampire Weekend (e.g., Oxford Comma), but their sound does seem to lack some variety. Also like the Feelies now and then. But I find my tastes going back to stuff that echoes “dark wave” in some form: e.g., Metric, The Knife, etc.
Welcome, and look forward to reading your blog this (short) semester.

Hi Mike,
Although I graduated a few years before you, I agree that different media outlets are becoming more internet based. These courses should help us better understand the changes. When I graduated with my BA in Media Communications, school papers were handwritten and we were just getting started with using the internet as a source of research etc… needless to say it has come a long way since then.
Anyway, I can’t wait to officially start the class because we are sure to learn alot… I have already!

Hi Mike,
definitely agree with you about journalism becoming non-linear. Things are quickly changing. Thanks for sharing your music blog with us. I appreciate your music variety. I think I might add your blog to my google reader! ; )

Hi Mike,
How dod you add your latest tweets to your blog?

Hi,
I found that you can choose from a bunch of layouts that give you the option of adding feeds and media by clicking the “Appearance” tab on the left. Once you get there, it shows only those two lame themes. However, where it says “Manage Themes” at the top, you can click “Add New” and this will take you to a page where you can install better themes. I found mine by clicking the “featured” tab, but you can look around and find one that works for you.
Once you click “install” and update your theme, you can click “Appearence” again on the left but this time go to “widgets.” You can drag the widgets you want to appear on your blog (like twitter) to the right hand side under “Default sidebar,” and once you click save they should activate on your blog.
I hope this helps a little bit! If you have any more questions let me know I’d be glad to help.
